It has been said by scholars and professors around the world that music is the universal language. This is certainly the case at Beaconsfield Primary, where each child who attends, including the Beaconsfield Intensive Language Centre (BIEC), has a one hour session of music per week, in which he/she learns the elements of music through listening, singing, playing instruments, dancing and moving. The Music Studio has an array of instruments, from non-tuned percussion and novelty items, to tuned percussion, wind and strings. The BIEC students learn music, even though they speak none to very little English, and discover that music enhances their learning of their new language. Music also assists with confidence, because children across the school find that they can play the piano or guitar for the class, just as they do in their own homes.
